Are you between 18 and 30 (or 35, depending on the country of citizenship) and looking to work and live in Canada temporarily? The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is one of the most accessible and flexible ways for young citizens from many countries to gain professional experience in Canada. Over 35 countries around the world have bilateral agreements with Canada, making this opportunity available to thousands of eligible youth each year.
At Immigria, we’ve supported applicants from across the globe in making the most of the IEC program and starting their Canadian journey with clarity and confidence.
In addition to offering a unique work-and-travel experience, the IEC is also a strong foundation for a future Express Entry profile, particularly under the Canadian Experience Class. Gaining skilled work experience in Canada and improving your English or French language skills can significantly boost your chances of becoming a permanent resident.
What is the International Experience Canada Program?
IEC is a bilateral program that allows young people to work in Canada through a temporary work permit. Participants can typically stay for up to 12 or 24 months, depending on their country of citizenship and the category they apply under.
There are three main streams:
Working Holiday: Offers an open work permit so you can work for almost any employer across Canada. It’s a perfect option for those who want to discover the Canadian culture and the country while working, and an excellent opportunity to learn or improve your English and/or French, depending on the region where you choose to live.
Young Professionals: Requires a job offer in your field and grants an employer-specific permit.
International Co-op (Internship): Intended for post-secondary students with a work placement in their field of study.
IEC for French Citizens: A Unique Opportunity
France has one of the most favorable agreements under the IEC. French citizens can participate in one of three categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, or International Co-op (Internship).
The maximum duration is up to 24 months, depending on the category chosen. While certain restrictions apply, such as being able to take part in the Working Holiday category only once, some participants may still be eligible to apply again through another category, such as the International Co-op, if they meet the requirements.
Beyond the temporary work experience, French citizens also benefit from Canada’s Francophone-friendly immigration pathways. Through Express Entry (EE) and various Provincial Nomination Programs, proficiency in French can significantly strengthen a candidate’s profile and increase the chances of becoming a Permanent Resident.
Julien’s Story: From Lyon to Vancouver
Julien, a 27-year-old graphic designer from Lyon, came to Immigria after hearing about the IEC program through a friend. He had been dreaming of exploring Canada's creative industries while improving his English.
We helped Julien choose the Working Holiday category, prepare his profile for the IEC pool, and understand the specific insurance and document requirements for French applicants. After being selected and receiving his Port of Entry letter (Acceptance letter), Julien relocated to Vancouver, where he quickly found work at a local design agency.
“I appreciated how clear everything became once I started working with Immigria. They knew exactly what I needed and saved me so much time,” Julien said.
Julien is now gaining Canadian work experience and already planning a future application for the Permanent Residency for French-category based selection.
