Last July marked a special moment in my journey, 10 years since I immigrated to Canada. Milestones like this invite reflection, and I’ve been thinking a lot about the path that brought me here: the challenges, the growth, and the people who helped shape Immigria into what it is today.
I believe it’s important to show the real, human side of immigration, what it feels like to start over, to build something from scratch, and to create a life in a new place.
So today, I’m opening up about my own immigration journey.
Because behind every visa, work permit, or PR card… there’s a story.
Ten years ago, I left Mexico and arrived in Canada by myself with a suitcase, big dreams, and no idea how much this country would change my life.
I came with hope, and questions. How would I adapt? Would I belong? Could I build something meaningful far from home?
Looking back now, all I can say is: what an incredible journey it’s been. From facing the unknown to founding Immigria, from improving my French to becoming a mom to a Canadian daughter, Canada has given me more than I ever imagined.
And this year, I’m celebrating two milestones that mean the world to me:
✨ 10 years of living in Canada
✨ 8 years of building Immigria, the immigration consultancy I founded and continue to lead with pride
When I first arrived in Montreal, everything was new and overwhelming.
I already spoke English and French, which helped in many situations. But in Quebec, I quickly realized I needed to strengthen both languages, and that mastering French was essential to truly adapt, find my voice, and build a life here.
So I took classes, practiced daily, made mistakes, and learned from them. With time, I found my rhythm, and eventually, my place in this new culture.
Starting over in a new country is challenging. Starting a business here? Even more so.
And as an immigrant woman, I faced additional barriers like proving myself, navigating unfamiliar systems, and earning credibility.
But I’ve always believed that growth comes from discomfort. And I knew I had something valuable to offer.
Immigria was born from my own experience, and from a strong desire to help others going through the same process.
I became a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC), certified by both IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) and MIFI (Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration), to provide professional, trustworthy support to those navigating the Canadian and Quebec immigration systems.
My goal has always been clear: to make immigration human, honest, and accessible.
Since launching Immigria 8 years ago, we’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of people from all over the world, as workers, students, entrepreneurs, investors and families, find their own path to Canada. Every time someone tells us, “Thanks to you, I finally feel hopeful again,” I’m reminded why this work matters so much.
Starting a business is no small feat, especially while raising a baby, building a new life, and shaping a vision that evolves over time.
Over the past eight years, Immigria has grown from a side project to a full-time mission. Every phase taught me something: how to balance work and family, how to adapt in a field that’s always changing and evolving, and how to own the value of my experience, as a professional, an immigrant, and an entrepreneur mom.
I’ve been lucky to grow on this journey with an incredible team who are always there to support me and who believe in me and this mission. I’m also grateful for our amazing clients and for a community that continues to grow and inspire me.
At Immigria, we’re all in this together, and that’s what I’m celebrating today!
One of the most meaningful moments of this journey was becoming a mother here in Canada.
My daughter is Canadian, and every time I look at her, I see not only my story, but also the future and opportunities this country can offer to the next generation.
Montreal has been my home since day one. It’s where I strengthened my English and French, built my business, and raised my family.
Canada gave me space to grow, to create, and to give back. And for that, I will always be grateful.
If you’re thinking about immigrating to Canada, whether from Mexico or anywhere else, I want you to know something: your dream is possible.
I know, because I lived it.
I’ve been where you are: full of questions, full of hope. And now, through Immigria, I’ve dedicated my life to helping others take the same leap of faith I once took.
Thank you for being part of this celebration, 10 years in Canada, 8 years of Immigria, and every immigrant journey that continues to inspire and move us forward.
With gratitude and love,
Melissa
