At Immigria, we believe that every immigration journey is unique and sometimes, extraordinary. One of those stories is within our own leadership team. Leonardo, our Chief Financial Officer, is originally from Mexico and has been living in Canada since 2010. His path has been full of transitions, learning, and growth, but above all, it’s a story of determination and purpose.
Leonardo arrived in Quebec as a permanent resident, filled with hope but also facing the reality of starting from scratch. Like many newcomers, he encountered a completely new culture, new people, new laws, different weather, unfamiliar food, and a different way of life. Even with a background in finance, he had to take on jobs unrelated to his field just to move forward.
But Leonardo didn’t see these experiences as setbacks. He saw them as part of the journey. While working, he began preparing for the Quebec CPA exam, a rigorous process that took him three years, including learning French to meet the province’s language requirements.
Out of 120 people who started the program with him, only 25 completed it, and he was among them.
When he finally joined the Order of Chartered Professional Accountants of Quebec, Leonardo’s career began to take off. He secured his first job in finance in Canada, and step by step, his life began to stabilize. Later, he pursued an MBA in Quebec, gained significant experience in his field, and never stopped learning. Today, he’s even working on a project with the federal government of Canada.
His story is a reflection of one simple truth: "Success comes from continuous preparation and the willingness to keep growing."
Leonardo’s career has evolved, but his mindset has stayed consistent: study, improve, and surround yourself with people who help you grow. As he puts it, “Find a circle that lifts you up, both personally and professionally.”
Now a Canadian citizen for over 10 years, Leonardo takes pride in living between two cultures. He is deeply connected to his Mexican heritage and equally proud of his Canadian identity. He believes that both can coexist and enrich each other, and he enjoys sharing the best of both worlds with the people around him.
Leonardo also reflects on how vital it was to have someone guiding him through the immigration process when he first came to Canada, an experienced immigration professional who supported him through every step. Today, he sees that same support reflected in the mission of Immigria. Although his immigration journey started long before our firm was founded, he recognizes in our work the same dedication and personalized guidance that helped him succeed.
Leonardo also took a moment to acknowledge the leadership and vision behind Immigria. His words of recognition for what we've achieved as immigrants, as Latinos, and as non-francophones building something meaningful in Quebec meant a lot. His support and presence on our team make a difference every day.
Leonardo doesn’t believe in giving a one-size-fits-all answer to the question, “Should I move to Canada?” Everyone’s journey is personal. But he does offer a few key recommendations for those considering it:
Do your research. Understand how Canada works: its legal system, education, banking, housing, healthcare, weather, even its cuisine. It’s different from many countries, and knowing what to expect is essential.
Prepare continuously. Whether it’s language, professional credentials, or workplace culture, growth never stops.
Surround yourself with the right people. Building a support network can make all the difference.
Be open to starting from the bottom, but never lose sight of your long-term goals.
Validate your knowledge. Even if you studied in your home country, requalifying or revalidating your profession in Canada might be necessary.
Leonardo is a strong believer that your attitude shapes your journey. He’s living proof that even if you start far from your goals, you can get there with consistency and a desire to grow.
Leonardo’s journey isn’t about perfection, it’s about persistence. It’s a story of adapting, studying, learning, and trusting the process. If you're dreaming of a new life in Canada, his story is a reminder that the path may be complex, but it’s also deeply rewarding.
At Immigria, we understand what it takes to build a new life in Canada, because we’ve lived it too. Whether you want to work, study, or settle permanently, we’re here to guide you every step of the way with certified, experienced immigration professionals.
